Malibu and Sprite Cocktail Recipe

Malibu and Sprite

My Malibu and Sprite is a refreshing combination of Malibu rum and Sprite–ready in 1 minute! This simple 2-ingredient tropical cocktail is perfect anytime of year.

This is how I make the best version. I know it may sound low-brow, but I LOVE that it’s light and refreshing while also being easy.

As you know, I like limes–so when I make this cocktail I add extra lime juice and wedges!

What is a Malibu and Sprite cocktail?

The Malibu and Sprite is one of the easiest rum drinks EVER! It may sound basic, but it’s legit. This 2-ingredient mixed drink is usually 1 part Malibu coconut rum to 4 parts Sprite–depending on how strong you like it. It can be garnished with a lime wedge. I add extra lime for zesty flavor.

Why I love this recipe!

  • Summery Flavors! Tropical coconut definitely makes the list of my favorite summertime flavors!
  • Easy To Make! Simply combine the ingredients, pour, and enjoy in just 1 minute (or less)!
  • Large Batch! This Malibu & Sprite Recipe scales easily to yield more servings! If your pitcher isn’t large enough, try using a fun drink dispenser, they hold more AND look cute!
  • Super Smooth! You won’t find any strong alcohol flavor in this cocktail as it’s almost completely hidden between that coconut and lemon-lime taste!

I think the secret to this drink really lies in the silky coconut-y Malibu Rum! It has a refreshing taste that’s bursting with sweet bubbly lemon-lime flavor from the Sprite that helps the drink go down nice and smooth!

What do I need to make a Malibu and Sprite?

This Malibu and Sprite comes together quickly! Making a second or even third batch is a breeze! To make it, you’ll need:

  • Malibu Rum – Gives this drink its coconut flavor!
  • Sprite – Lemon-lime, sweet soda.
  • Ice – Keeps this Malibu and Sprite drink perfectly chilled!
  • (Optional) Garnish – Slice up fresh lime wedges! But if you don’t have lime, it will still be delicious.

That’s it!

Malibu and Sprite tips

Here’s how to take this drink to the next level!

  • The 1:4 pour creates a Malibu and Sprite. Serve over plenty of ice in a highball or low-ball glass!
  • In a pinch, a budget rum like Bacardi works too in my opinion
  • I recommend putting your Malibu rum in the freezer for ultimate chill—I find that this helps the ice melt slower.
  • I always make sure everything is ice cold (even the glass)
  • Don’t skimp on the lime wedge!

The Malibu and Sprite ratio

Malibu rum has a mild, smooth flavor, so you’ll taste more of the Sprite than the alcohol. Here’s the right Malibu to Sprite ratio:

  • 1 part Malibu to 4 parts Sprite OR
  • 1 oz Malibu to 4 oz Sprite

You can adjust the ratio depending on how strong you like your drink.

Malibu and Sprite is served cold

The key to a good Malibu and Sprite is to serve it really cold. There are a few things I do to accomplish that, but it starts with storing your Malibu rum in the freezer. Rum won’t freeze, and will be perfectly chilled for your drink.

Other ways I make my cocktail very cold:

  • I mix the cold ingredients with ice cubes. This will dilute the drink slightly as the ice melts in the glass, but will keep it cool.
  • I serve my Malibu and Sprite cocktail in a chilled glass. More on this ahead.

Chilling your glass quickly

Filling your glass with ice and cold water for a minute–while gathering ingredients and mixing the cocktail–will chill your glass fast! Simply toss out the ice and water before mixing.

Tip: Add these ingredients for complexity!

For the very best Malibu and Sprite, I’ve got a few more tips.

  1. Pineapple juice: I keep mini (6 oz) cans of pineapple juice in my pantry. This way, I don’t need to open a large bottle of pineapple juice if I’m making a cocktail.
  2. Blue Curacao: If you’re feeling adventurous, add blue curacao to give your Malibu & Sprite a visually striking twist.
  3. Flavored syrups: Try adding a splash of passion fruit syrup, coconut syrup, or spiced simple syrup for added flavor.
  4. Orange bitters: I like to add 1 dash of orange bitters for added citrus notes.
  5. Garnishes: A wedge of grilled pineapple or a coconut rim can add visual appeal and taste complexity.

I recommend starting with small amounts–you don’t want to overpower the Malibu Rum and Sprite flavors.

When to serve Malibu and Sprite

  • Summer barbecue
  • Brunch
  • Girls Night In
  • Luau’s
  • Cocktail party
  • After dinner drink
  • Holiday Gathering (garnish with fresh cranberries for a festive twist)

Cocktail Equipment

Before mixing a Malibu and Sprite cocktail you’ll need the best bartender tools.

  • Cocktail Glasses: make sure your bar is stocked lowball or highball glasses to show off your favorite cocktails.
  • Pouring Spout: once you’ve opened a new bottle of tequila insert these affordable pourers to make cocktail assembly a breeze.
  • Jigger: use a jigger to accurately measure spirits, juices, syrups and shrubs.
  • Bar Spoons: slender and long bar spoons are a must-have when stirring carbonated drinks.
  • Cutting Board: purchase a small cutting board for your garnishes like lime.
  • Rimmer: Tequila lovers should outfit their bar with a handy rimmer for salting and sugaring glassware.
  • Muddler: fans of tequila love a sturdy muddler for lime. Muddler’s are handy for any cocktail ingredients that need a pounding like citrus wedges.
  • Ice Bucket: chill bottles of tequila quickly in an ice bucket or keep by the bar when muddling mixers into cool creations.
  • Ice Crusher: fans of mixed drinks love an ice crusher.
  • Ice Cube Kit: I suggest silicone ice cube trays. They’re easy to clean and are available in various shapes and sizes.
  • Juicer: invest in an electronic juicer or buy an affordable hand-held to easily juice fresh citrus like lemons and limes.
  • Citrus Peeler & Zester: adorn your craft cocktails with a thick citrus peel or finer ribbons of lime or lemon zest.
  • Bottle Opener: easily open bottles of Sprite.
  • Cocktail Kit: cocktail kits are the perfect gift for newbie mixologists as they include basic bartender tools like a jigger, shaker and spoon.
