2. Incaberry
Inca berries (aka Peruvian groundcherry) is used to make jams and pie filling among other foods. Restaurants use it for decoration due to its ornamental husk.
The scientific name for Incaberry is Physalis peruviana.
3. Indonesian Snake Fruit
Indonesian snake fruit (salak) belongs to the palm family. Salak grow in clusters and are native to Sumatra and Java.
Snake fruit is slightly sweet, crunchy and can be quite dry. Its flavor and texture are similar to chestnuts.
The skin of the snake fruit looks like shiny snake scales. The skin is reddish brown and scaly. The meat is edible.
4. Indian Gooseberry
Indian gooseberries are one of my favorite superfoods. The small berries are round and shiny or greenish-yellow.
Its flavor has been described as quite tart, bitter, and astringent. Its antioxidant content is higher than that of any other known whole food. They are also known as amla.
5. Ichigo
Ichigo is the Japanese word for strawberry. The Japanese strawberry is rounded. It has a strong strawberry flavor with a slightly sour taste. People like to eat it because of its juicy texture and sweet taste.
6. Indian Mango
Indian mangos are known for their sweet flavor and juiciness. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Popular Indian mango varieties include Alphonso, Kesar, and Chaunsa.
Indian mangos are often used in a variety of dishes, including desserts, smoothies, and chutneys.
My favorite Indian mango smoothie is the mango lassi – a delicious creamy drink that includes yogurt, milk, a little sugar, and a bit of cardamom. Sooo good!
7. Ivy Gourd
Gourds are considered fruits. Ivy gourd is grown in some places just for the fruit, which has a crisp, white flesh that tastes like a cucumber.
Its green fruit can be used in curries and soups, while its ripe fruit can be stewed or eaten raw. Its leaves or shoots can be eaten boiled, sautéed, blanched or in soups.
8. Indian Hog Plum
Indian hog plum is a juicy and fibrous with a sweet and sour flavor that is similar to a cross between a mango and a pineapple. It’s a small, oval fruit that’s green when unripe and turns yellow when fully ripe.
Indian Hog Plum is used in a variety of culinary applications, including chutneys, pickles, juices, and desserts. Indian Hog Plum is also known as Ambarella and native to South Asia and Southeast Asia.
9. Inga (Ice Cream Bean)
The golden inga pods are filled with succulent white pulp. Inga fruit tastes like vanilla ice cream. Once you have removed the outer shell, the seeds inside are soft, white and fleshy.
Ingas are also known as “ice cream bean”.
10. Ivory Mango
Ivory mango is also known as Jingu ivory and is native to China. Its shape is elongated and thin, giving it the appearance of elephant tusks. Which is how it got its name.
Other mango varieties that start with I are Irwin Mango and Ice Cream Mango.
11. Ita Palm
The fruit is reddish brown, covered in scales and contains a soft yellow interior. It is a nut-like fruit, covered with a protective shell, similar to a chestnut. The center of the fruit is a small, hard, edible seed.
The fruit is full of vitamin C and can be eaten raw, fermented or mixed with jams and ice cream.
This plant typically grows in wetlands or watery areas such as swamps, found in tropical parts of South America. The fruit of the Ita palm is native to South America.

The black velvet tamarind is known in Nigeria as Icheku (Igbo). Black velvet tamarind is rich in vitamins including thiamine, vitamin A, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin and the most important one is vitamin C. Local children refer to the black velvet tamarind fruit as “lickie lickie”.
