Tequila and Mountain Dew Recipe

I’ve long been a fan of pairing tequila and fizzy sodas together. And a friend recently turned me on to the fact that Mountain Dew also plays beautifully with tequila. And after giving it a try–I couldn’t agree more!

Ever tried mixing Mountain Dew with tequila when making a “redneck margarita”?

I think you’ll love it. ♡

I mean, nothing says ‘party’ like a Tequila and Mountain Dew cocktail! This is how I make the very best version of this simple mixed drink.

What is Tequila and Mountain Dew?

The Tequila and Mountain Dew (‘Mtn Dew’) is one of the easiest tequila party drinks EVER!! This easy tequila cocktail is 1 part tequila to 4 parts Mountain Dew (depending on how strong you like it).

Mtn Dew is a citrus-flavored soda with hints of lemon, lime, and orange. The drink can be garnished with a lime wedge (or two). I like the added citrus taste!

I’m going to share how I make it, but know that it still tastes just as good without the extras.

What is a Tequila and Mountain Dew called?

It turns out I’m not the only one who enjoys the combo of tequila with the classic citrus soda–the mix of tequila and Mountain Dew is also known as Redneck Margarita or Mexican Dew.

I also enjoy it with cheap tequila and 12 oz of Diet Mountain Dew for a Hillbilly Margarita. Stir with a butter knife. Rim glass with margarita salt (optional). The lower-calorie version tastes just as delicious!

Why I love this recipe!

  • Zesty Flavors! Citrus definitely make the list of my favorite summertime flavors!
  • Easy To Make! Simply combine the ingredients, pour, and enjoy in just 1 minute!
  • Smooth! The tequila is almost completely hidden by Mtn Dew’s citrus soda taste!
  • Large Batch! Depending on the size of my pitcher, I can easily scale it to yield more servings!

Turns out that Mtn Dew, with its citrus notes, balances out tequila just perfectly. And when served with a coarse salt rim (optional, if you like a marg vibe), I found each sip so darn good. If you love Mountain Dew and tequila as much as I do, I highly recommend giving it a try!

Ingredient notes

This Tequila and Mountain Dew recipe comes together as easily as it goes down! To make this cocktail, I gather:

  • Tequila – I like Jose Cuervo–no need for expensive liquor in my drinks! Any good-quality tequila will work in this cocktail.
  • Mountain Dew – Bubbly, lemon-lime sweetness. I use diet Mtn Dew.
  • Ice – Keeps Tequila and Mountain Dew cocktails perfectly chilled!
  • Lime wedge and coarse salt (optional): I like to rim the glass with salt, by running a lime wedge around the rim and dipping it in a plate of coarse sea salt (I recommend Kosher salt if you don’t have sea salt).

Tequila and Mountain Dew tips

Here’s how to take this drink to the next level!

  • The 1:4 pour creates a Tequila and Mountain Dew. To make this in the average rocks glass, I simply pour over ice! You can also serve this drink in a highball glass with extra ice.
  • I use a good budget tequila like Jose Cuervo silver which works perfectly. You don’t have to splurge–unless you want to!
  • I recommend putting the tequila in the freezer for ultimate chill—I find that this helps the ice melt slower.
  • I always make sure everything is ice cold (even the glass)
  • Don’t skimp on the lime wedge!

The Tequila and Mountain Dew ratio

Tequila has a subtle flavor, so you’ll taste more of the Mountain Dew than the alcohol. Here’s the right tequila to Mtn Dew ratio:

  • 1 oz tequila to 4 oz Mountain Dew OR
  • 1 part tequila to 4 parts Mountain Dew

You can adjust the ratio depending on how strong you like your drink.

I find the classic 1:2 ratio a bit STRONG myself.

Tip: Add lime for complexity!

For the BEST Tequila and Mountain Dew, I muddle lime to step it up!

I recommend muddling 2 lime wedges in the glass first. The drink begs for the brightness from lime to cut Mountain Dew’s sweetness! You can also use lime or orange, if that’s what you have on hand.

How I make Tequila and Mountain Dew for a party

This recipe as written is for 1 drink, but let’s face it, this drink is perfect to share! Here’s how I alter it for a party:

  • Figure out how many people are coming to your party and adjust the servings — For example if you’re having 10 people at your party, you’ll need to 10x this recipe.
  • Fill up a pitcher — to the pitcher, add tequila, Mountain Dew, and ice. Stir and chill.
  • Pour into ice-filled glasses — divide the pitcher contents equally among the glasses.
  • Garnish I add plenty of lime slices to my batch!

When to serve Tequila and Mountain Dew

  • Summer cocktail
  • Summer barbecue
  • Brunch
  • Cocktail party
  • After dinner drink

Ways I customize my Tequila and Mountain Dew

Here are fun ways I gussy this cocktail. For example, feel free to…

  • Use a different rim: I mix Tajín with coarse salt to make a chili-lime salted rim. Or mix some sugar with the salt.
  • Add jalapeño: I kick things up a spicy notch by muddling a jalapeño slice or two in the cocktail.
  • Add warming spices. I love stirring in a cinnamon stick to add some warming spice to this drink (especially in the fall).
  • Make it boozier. Add in a splash of Grand Marnier or rum.

Tequila and Mountain Dew is served cold

The key to a good Tequila and Mountain Dew is to serve it really cold. There are a few things I do to accomplish that, but it starts with storing your tequila in the freezer. Tequila won’t freeze, and will be perfectly chilled for your drink.

Other ways I make my cocktail very cold:

  • I mix the cold ingredients with ice cubes. This will dilute the drink slightly as the ice melts in the glass, but will keep it cool.
  • I serve my Tequila and Mountain Dew cocktail in a chilled glass. More on this ahead.

Chilling your glass quickly

I fill my glass with ice and cold water for a minute–while I gather ingredients and mix the cocktail–will chill my glass fast! I toss out the ice and water before mixing.
